A sizzling hot, new SPIRAL OF BLISS spin-off novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nina Lane
“Do you ever let go, storm girl?” he asked. “Ever lose control? Ever surrender?”
“Never,” I whispered. “I never surrender.”
A smile of both promise and warning curved his beautiful mouth.
“You will.”
Atmospheric scientist Kelsey March is under siege. Her tornado research project is on the skids and she’s fighting conflict in her university department. So when irresistible bad boy Archer West suggests a hot, wild fling while he’s in town, Kelsey is unable to resist his sexy offer.
Kelsey and Archer embark on a intense, exhilarating affair. But soon their differences and private battles encroach on their desire, and Kelsey discovers that Archer is a storm she can’t control.
I've often lamented (though perhaps not on the blog) on how difficult it is to find stand alone novels in romance. Everything seems to be connected to a series. So Nina Lane's Break the Sky sounded like the perfect fix to my stand alone reading need. It's connected to another of Ms. Lane's series, but I was fairly certain I could read this without feeling like I was missing something (or spoiling future reading for myself) and I was right.
I thought this book was really good. It had a good amount of erotic romantic moments, a great plot line and characters that were fun to read--and somewhat thrilling to read as well. Kelsey isn't a broken heroine in my opinion, but one who is living a life that isn't quite her. She's living it by choice however, not because she's running from anything, but because she felt it was time to put aside the wild child she'd always been, and live up to her legacy of strength. I liked that about her...but I also wanted her to be herself. I think what made her so easy to relate to is that everyone one of is always trying to be live up expectations that don't necessarily fit us, and we all have reasons for doing so, just like Kelsey does. So I was delighted when Archer came along, and gently nudged Kelsey to be herself.
He was a great hero. Tough, demanding, sexy, but with a goodness and clear sightedness that let him see right into the heart of Kelsey. He challenged her, and he was challenging himself in Mirror Lake. Archer had gotten his life cleaned up, but he had yet to mend fences with his brother Dean. And although Archer's reasons for visiting Mirror Lake aren't to mend fences, it's clear that he does want a family, the family he never felt he was apart of when he was growing up. Helping Dean out didn't seem like merely an excuse to stay close to Kelsey, but to stay close to the family he's always felt wasn't entirely one he belonged to.
Filled with honest emotion, some gripping storm chasing, erotic fun and moments of sadness and tenderness, this was one read I was not disappointed with as themes of family and responsibility and the realities of life are handled with a straightforwardness that this reader found new and engaging.
