The Enemy in Her Bed
Lady Amelia Sutherland would rather die than surrender to a man like Duncan MacLean. He is the fiercest warrior of his clan—her people's sworn enemy—and tonight he is standing over her bed. Eyes blazing, muscles taut, and battle axe gleaming, MacLean has come to kill Amelia's fiancĂ©. But once he sees the lovely, innocent Amelia, he decides to takeher instead.
The Lover in His Arms
Stealing the young bride-to-be is the perfect revenge against the man who murdered Duncan's one true love. But Lady Amelia turns out to be more than a pawn of vengeance and war. This brave, beautiful woman touches something deep in Duncan's soul that is even more powerful than a warrior's fury. But when Amelia begins to fall in love with her captor—and surrenders in his arms—the real battle begins.
My Thoughts
I was immediately intrigued by the blurb of Captured by the Highlander. There's so much left to the imagination by it after all. Plus, you know, it's a highlander romance. However, once I started reading, I was surprised to see how involved the plot was. I think I was expecting something a little lighter. But, that aside, I really enjoyed the book. There's a lot of history steeped in the book, and political twists and turns in the plot that was I was not expecting. Nor was Amelia.
Amelia is a character that I was thoroughly annoyed by. She's not stupid or mean or anything like that. She's really high minded and moral, which is fine. But I think what bothered me so much about her was that she starts off as this really naive, sheltered character and by the end, she's really grown up and learned to see the world in a different light. Nothing is black or white, and she comes to understand that. So I admired that about her. She struck me as being unwilling to accept who Duncan was--a warrior fighting for his country. She also failed to recognize that despite his previous quest for revenge for what Bennett had done, that he had restrained himself from killing the man until he threatened Amelia. She doesn't see that his nightmares and bouts of retching are really his mind's repulsion of the killing he's done. I just found it hard to forgive Amelia for leaving Duncan.
I did enjoy the story telling in the novel however, and I really liked Duncan's character. He was a man of his word, and I liked that while he was kinda alpha and dangerous, that he also had a very warm and caring side to him. He fights for a just cause by any means necessary and in the end I realized that his need for vengeance wasn't so much about Bennett personally as it was about making sure men like Bennett were not running around Scotland terrorizing innocent people. A really enjoyable read.
