Olivia Waterhouse has just graduated from nursing school and has her whole life ahead of her—until she gets drafted. Problem is, she isn’t being forced into the Army, she’s been chosen as a Kindred bride.

The Kindred are huge alien warriors—a race of genetic traders whose population is ninety-five percent male. After saving Earth from the threat of invasion they demand a reward—the right to find brides among the population. The chances of being chosen are about the same as those of winning the lottery—guess it’s just Liv’s lucky day.

Baird is a Beast Kindred who recently escaped imprisonment and torture at the hands of the malevolent Scourge. Through the torment and pain only one thing kept him sane—the thought of finding and claiming his bride—Olivia. His need to possess her is a burning intensity that threatens to consume them both.

Angry at having her future and her family taken away from her, Liv vows to fight back the only way she can—by resisting. She has one month on the Kindred Mothership with Baird—their claiming period. If she can keep from having bonding sex with him during that time, she can go home and get on with her life on Earth.

But Baird isn’t going to make it easy for her. Every week he is allowed to touch Liv more and more intimately and according to the contract she signed, she has to let him. She’s determined to resist him but his touch sets her on fire. And just as she thinks she knows what she wants, a twist of fate and an attack by the faceless Scourge AllFather changes everything…

My Thoughts

Wow, I was not expecting to enjoy this novel as much as I did. I heard about it from a friend, thought the premise was interesting (to say the least) and decided to pick it up. And I'm sooo impressed. This novel was romantic in its way. Pure fantasy in another, but the characters were well drawn, the events made sense and the story was just damn good. I'm smitten. Gaga. Completely won over by this series. I cannot wait to read the rest. Was the story sexy? Yes, but not in a raunchy kind of way. At least, not in my opinion. It had a lot more sweetness than I was expecting and I think that's what won me over. It was big alpha man wants his mate, but soo much better. So much more.

Baird: I have to say, I adored him. Despite how badly he wants Liv, he's a total gentleman, even compromising their claiming period in an effort to try and make her comfortable and less afraid of him. I was not expecting from the opening pages where he's introduced growling "mine" and all that jazz. He read a bit like, "me Tarzan, you Jane" in that introductory scene but that was quickly turned on its head and Baird was the most devoted mate ever. Patient, determined, but never demanding or overbearing. Sure, he had the urge to mark Liv and bond with her, but mostly he just wanted to love and protect her. He also tried so hard to make her understand it was because he loved her and not for any other biological reason. I thought he'd be a lot more sexually demanding of her, but he wasn't. He was extremely patient in trying to win her over so that their bonding would be a complete one. In the end, I came to see the Kindred mating process as finding your soul mate through biology and chemistry. And it was a totally alien idea, but a very romantic one in its way.

Liv: I admired her stubborn determination not bond with Baird. It was kinda sad in a way, because he loved her so much, but she had her own life and was willing to fight to keep it. She really views him as an alien simply trying to seduce her into belonging to him. She knows he's a nice guy and all, but she can't get past the idea that whatever affect he's having on her, it's something he's doing on purpose, or that's happening because of physiology. She's totally not willing to accept that it's because they belong together, that they have this biological need to be together. She thinks that's a load of crap, and who can blame her? Of course she's determined to resist him. I admired that she resists him and does so without being cruel. Sure, it's horrible of her to deny him when he loves her so much, but she's up front and honest about her intentions. She's very clear that she does not want to have bonding sex with him, and I liked her efforts to keep him at bay because it's so very obvious that's the last thing she wants to do. She's also never mean or nasty to him, and I liked that about her. And I loved that in the end she doesn't give up on him, and makes sure to bring Baird him back to himself so that they can be together.

An extremely unique novel, and an author with a lot of creativity and great writing style. Everything made sense, was well developed and read fluidly. I could not put the book down for an instant. Expect when I fell asleep from sheer inability to keep my eyes open. But I was right back into the book the second I woke up. So essentially I read it in one sitting. If you are looking for something completely different in romance, like sci fi or just are curious, read this book. I doubt you'll regret it.
